No School Monday for Remembrance Day

Our Remembrance Day Assembly will be held this Friday at 10:45am. It will be hosted by the Peace Pod.

Christmas Wreath and Poinsettia order forms went home today.
Grade 4 students received a Snow Pass offer

The students are collaborating more effectively during Ignite to create some interesting structures with the blue blocks.

Ms. Aitken taught Ms. Cox's class about encryption and deciding on a key so students can decrypt their peers encrypted code. Students also discussed examples of encryption used in their daily lives, such as social media passwords and wifi passwords!   They used their knowledge of addition and subtraction to increase the difficulty of the key.


Today, Mr. Lawson's class worked on their collaboration skills. Students started by reading 'Up the Creek" which taught them that working as a team to accomplish a goal works better than working alone. Then, the students put their skills to the test and had to work as a team to find letters around the room and unscramble their team's word. Lastly, students worked as a whole class to create a sentence: "Joy Pod will be learning about grasslands this week". Great collaboration, students!

Grasslands...

We continued to learn about the grasslands and how the place effects the animals from the wild.

Eco Team is working hard to create a design/logo for the club this year in hopes to make their own t-shirts.

Today we started a new Read Aloud, Ticket to Curlew.  It is a story of a boy who moved to Alberta in 1913 with his family who purchased land to settle.

Tuesday

UPDATES
-Jacket Racket will end tomorrow Wednesday Nov. 6^th.  Please send gently used winter wear including coats, mittens, scarves, hats, boots, etc. to school in a bag marked with the items and sizes inside.  We appreciate your support of this much needed program!

HIGHLIGHTS
Estimation is an important skill to have. When applying this skill to a business, it's a skill that will earn or cost you money! Today students looked at how we can improve our skill of estimation. Ask your child how much hair is in our class and how long it would take to count to a million. 

This afternoon we gained new knowledge on the grasslands. Students started by sharing their thoughts on what the grasslands are. Below are their thoughts we recorded on chart paper.

Students started to watch GRASSLANDS: A HIDDEN WILDERNESS from CBC. They recorded things they learned in their visual journals. We will be continuing to add to our pages as we watch more of the video.

-Solo auditions for choir are this Friday morning. 
-No School on Monday November 11th; this is a statutory holiday. 


HIGHLIGHTS
Ignite time was a choice of whole school SPARK in the gym or hang in Joy Pod to create your own colour. We saw many new colour coming to a paint store near you!

For Math today students had the opportunity to open their eyes to how we see math in everyday life. Their challenge today was to answer the following question: Where does the math live in grass? Using various samples of grass students brainstormed individually and as a group the many ways we can see math in grass. 

Students pulled of a Buffalo Jump reenactment. We had wolves, buffalo, buffalo calves and a buffalo jump! Check out the video on our Twitter feed!!


Students had the opportunity to connect with the book COURAGE today. As we read aloud they had to write down connections from their life or from other experiences to the book.

For word of the day we looked at the word EXPERIENCE. Students had to write about an impactful experience they had and what they learned from this experience. Check out some of the experiences below:
