Highlights...
Our Ignite theme for the week is farms, a topic picked from students’ ideas that were placed in a bag earlier in the year! During our active Ignite category, students explored which animals live on a farm, as well as which sounds they make. Samples from the estimation station used throughout conferences, containing farming seeds, beans, and wheat/barley have begun to be counted during our calm Ignite category. Loose parts were used by students during our creative Ignite category to create their own farm.

We investigated and wrote about the consequences of our grasslands disappearing during inquiry, using the prompt, “If the grasslands go extinct…?”. This led us to explore the replica skulls of various animals and choose a word each that expressed how we felt/ our initial reaction/ descriptive words!

In the afternoon, we continued reading our novel study, Ticket to Curlew, and worked on Word Work. Near the end of the school day we participated in a Circle Share that allowed us to share our wonders and fears concerning the skulls and any other questions, comments, or wonderments we have about the grasslands.

Monday November 25th

Happy Monday!

Today the Joy Pod students started their day with 'Just Dance' to get our bodies moving and worked on our grasslands mural for Ignite.

In Math, students worked on 2-D shapes, specifically learning about symmetry and polygons. Ask your child tonight to find a shape around them that is symmetrical, and ask them how they know! Here are some examples of symmetrical shapes within the school:

Students had a chance to finish their observations and wonderments about the grassland samples in the classroom. Students recorded in their visual journals what they noticed about the samples including colors, height, texture and named the samples. Lastly, students began to write a reflection in their journals answering the question "What would happen if the grasslands went extinct?".

Today the Joy Pod students were also introduced to poetry! We began reading a variety of poems and were deciding which poems were our favorite and made connections to our own lives.

How do you read a graph...

We continued working on graphing our coulee data today in math and the students are starting to make some thoughtful conclusions regarding the graphs.
